About Richard
I am a psychotherapist, addiction counsellor and coach with more than ten years’ experience working with addiction, mental health and behaviour change. I work primarily, though not exclusively, with men — many of whom appear successful and capable from the outside while privately finding some part of life increasingly difficult to manage.
This may involve cocaine, alcohol, gambling, burnout, anxiety or a growing sense of disconnection from themselves and others. My approach is direct, thoughtful and practical, bringing together psychotherapy, specialist addiction work and coaching depending on what someone needs.
I have always been interested in the gap between how someone appears and what may be happening beneath the surface. People can continue working, providing and meeting expectations long after something has begun to go wrong.
The outside can remain convincing for a long time.
Many of the men I work with don’t necessarily think of themselves as someone who needs therapy. They are aware that something has become harder to manage, or that the strategies which once helped them cope are creating problems of their own. I am less interested in imposing explanations than in helping someone develop an honest understanding of their own experience.
I have worked in specialist addiction and mental health services, including Priory Hospital in London, and with clients from a wide range of backgrounds — professionals, business leaders, creative people and those living in the public eye. My additional training includes Brainspotting, harm reduction psychotherapy, motivational approaches and evidence-informed work with addiction and behaviour change.
